Silver medal at BOI 2013

The Macedonian high school students achieved an all-time best result at the 21st Balkan Olympiad in Informatics (BOI), held from September 7th till September 14th 2013, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kliment Serafimov won a silver medal, while the fourth-year students Bojan Serafimov and Vasil Kuzevski each won a bronze medal. The fourth Macedonian contestant in this regional competition was Filip Bedjovski from Strumica.

The team was led by Mile Jovanov and Emil Stankov from the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering (FCSE) in Skopje.

Teams of at most 4 high school students can participate in the Balkan Olympiad, one team from each of the member countries. Current members of BOI are the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Turkey. This year, the absence of the Albanian team and the presence of the strongest Balkan countries in this area, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Turkey, made the winning of any medal a real challenge. By earning one silver and two bronze medals, Macedonia left behind most of the other countries, gradually becoming one of the most successful countries in the competition.

Additionally, as representatives of guest countries at BOI, there were teams from Croatia, Slovenia and Tajikistan. These teams competed unofficially.

All the participants, beside in the competition, actively took part in cultural and social activities in which they presented their own nation, and also made friends with students from other countries.

The Macedonian team's trip to Sarajevo was sponsored by the Ministry of Information Society and Administration of Macedonia. With this, the Ministry expressed its support of the activities of the Computer Society of Macedonia for the organization of the national competitions in informatics. FCSE regularly supports the organization of the competitions in informatics.
